Pre-purchase Surveys

Two types of pre-purchase survey are undertaken namely the "Condition Report" and the "Structural Report". Below is an example of the aspects covered in the case of a GRP sailing boat.

The "Condition Report" covers comment on the hull skin, structural members and structural bulkheads, keel and keel fixing, rudder and steering gear, stern gear, skin fittings, including toilets, bilge pump systems and pipework, visual inspection of the engine, engine room and engine related equipment (no dismantling of machinery takes place, this is not an engineers report with compression tests, etc.), ground tackle, deck and superstructure, below decks including joinery, linings, soft furnishings, gas system and installation, fire extinguishers, comment on electrics and navigation equipment (we cannot tell whether the instruments are accurate during this kind of inspection), rig, quality of cloth of sails (these are not laid out for inspection) and domestic plumbing. Basically everything, which is worthy of a comment, will receive one in this report.

The "Structural Report" covers comment on the hull skin, all structural members and structural bulkheads, keel and keel fixing, rudder and steering gear, stern gear, skin fittings, seacocks etc., shroud anchorage points, engine beds, deck and superstructure.
